Whether for dipping or dunking, sloshing or soaking, these sweet and savory sauces are a great way to encourage your kids to eat their fruits and veggies. Next time you pack apple slices into their lunch add a container of peanut butter or honey. Hummus pairs well with carrots; sour cream and dill go great with celery. Sweet and Savory Sauces:
Makes 1 cup
Prep time: Approx. 6 minutes
1 can chick peas drained
¼ cup tahini
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup lemon or lime juice
1 clove garlic (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)
salt to taste (around ¼ teaspoon)
Put all ingredients in a food processor and process until creamy. You can experiment by mixing in any of the following: parsley, cilantro, marinated hot peppers, artichoke hearts or extra garlic.
Creamy Almond Yogurt Dip
Prep time: 5 minutes
1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
½ cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon almond extract
1 6-ounce container plain yogurt
Pinch of salt
Beat together softened cream cheese and sugar until fluffy. Add yogurt, vanilla extract and almond extract and beat to combine. Serve with cut fruit.
