Creamy Banana Ice Cream

Three-ingredient Creamy Banana Ice Cream is a healthy treat your kids will love!

Healthy can still mean great tasting, too. For a guilt-free ice cream treat, try this quick and easy recipe. It’s naturally sweet and makes good use of those bananas sitting on your counter. The chocolate chips will satisfy cravings and fill your body with flavonoids, and the nuts supply healthy fats.

Serves 1
Prep time: 60 minutes

2 bananas
8-10 semi-sweet chocolate chips
8-10 almonds or nut of choice

1. Peel and slice bananas into small pieces. Lay them on a dish in a single layer and put them in the freezer for 1 hour, or until frozen.
2. While freezing, chop the chocolate chips and almonds in a blender. Remove and set aside.
3. Once the bananas are frozen, add them to a blender or food processor and blend, occasionally scraping down the sides, until an ice cream-like consistency is reached.
4. You can add the chopped ingredients back to the blender to incorporate into the ice cream, or sprinkle them as a topping.

Portion Control

A small portion, like ½ cup of ice cream, can be eaten more than just once in a while; make it something that’s once a week. “It helps the child learn more about what portion control is more than an ‘all or nothing mentality.’ Kids I’ve worked with that have a healthy relationship with food learned to incorporate [treats] in appropriate portion sizes. Not necessarily good and bad, but as a ‘sometimes’ food,” registered dietician Rachel Berman of Calorie Count says.
